A Look at Heroes of the Past and Present

Hello buddy! Every November 10, we always commemorate Hero’s Day. This warning was motivated by the events of the Battle of Surabaya which witnessed the struggle of the people of Surabaya to unite against the British army. In that event, many of our heroes died in the struggle to defend the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

In the past, heroes had more connotations as figures who fought on the battlefield and fought using physical weapons and critical thoughts to escape the shackles of colonialism. Indeed, at that time Indonesia’s socio-political conditions were still unstable because they were still in the shadow of colonialism.

The struggles of the heroes of the past were no joke. Sweat dripping, blood dripping, and tears flowing. They risk their lives and honor to protect and defend their beloved homeland.

There have been countless heroes in the past, from the colonial era to the post-independence era. Call it Prince Diponegoro, RA Kartini, Pattimura, Ki Hajar Dewantara, Bung Tomo, General Sudirman, Ir. Soekarno, Moh. Hatta, and many others who are fighting for this nation.

Times have shifted, but heroes are still there today. There are so many heroes, but maybe you don’t realize their role. In this day and age, heroes are no longer holding weapons. They also no longer fought against the invaders. Who do you think are today’s heroes?

Heroes don’t always wear robes. Apart from teachers, today’s heroes are health workers such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and so on. Just like the heroes of the past, their dedication is also at stake. It is not uncommon for health workers to die on the “battlefield” due to exposure to viruses and diseases.

The role and services of health workers cannot be denied anymore. Moreover, in difficult times like these, health workers are at the forefront to fight the Covid-19 pandemic that is haunting the community.

Threats to the state are not always in the form of physical attacks, but there are also ideological threats. Threats also don’t always come from outside the country, some come from within our own bodies. They are ready to sacrifice their body and soul to protect all Indonesian people.

Friends, on Hero’s Day in 2021 the theme that is carried is “My Heroes, My Inspiration”. Let’s make these heroes our inspiration in practicing noble values that are full of unity, struggle, and sacrifice.

Nowadays, everyone can be a hero. Be a hero every step of the way, be a hero in everyday life, and be a modern day hero who cares for others. Happy Hero’s Day, pal. Strengthen national unity, build harmony among each other!
