Buddy, of course, have often heard the national anthem Indonesia Raya echoed in various state events. But before becoming the national anthem as it is now, the songwriter, Wage Rudolf Soepratman, had to go through a struggle that was not easy.
Wage Rudolf Soepratman or WR Supratman was born on March 19, 1903. He is a journalist and musician. Before deciding to become a journalist for Kaoem Kita (1924-1925) and Sin Po (1926-1933), he worked as a teacher. WR Supratman is a young man who never misses attending Youth Congress I and II.
WR Soepratman’s creation of the anthem Indonesia Raya began when he read an article about “Which Indonesian composer can compose the Indonesian national anthem that can lift the spirits of the people?” in Timboel magazine published by Solo. Soepratman’s heart then moved. Until one night in 1926, Soepratman began to write Indonesian song notes and compose songs using the violin.
At the Second Youth Congress on October 28, 1928 at the Indonesische Clubgebouw Building, Jl Kramat Raya 106 the song Indonesia Raya was first performed with a violin and without lyrics. Some congress participants tried to embrace WR Supratman with teary eyes. Some clapped. There are also those who cheered asking for the song to be played again. On the other hand, representatives of the colonial government and the Dutch secret police were dumbfounded. They didn’t understand what had just happened. They consider the songs played as nothing more than entertainment and harmless.
Since then the name WR Supratman has become increasingly popular along with the scores and the song Indonesia Raya—originally entitled “Indonesia”—which was released by Sin Po on the Saturday, November 10, 1928 edition. Leaflets containing the scores and lyrics of three Indonesia Raya stanzas were also distributed.
It didn’t stop there, WR Supratman then met a friend of his who owns a recording studio, named Yo Kim Tjan. In the recording studio, WR Supratman made a LP recording of the song Indonesia Raya, the violin version of the song, along with his voice, and the keroncong orchestra version. Keroncong at that time was popular music among youths. WR Supratman hopes that the national anthem will be more widely known.
After the second youth congress took place, the song Indonesia Raya was increasingly recognized by all circles. The Indonesian National Party (PNI) at the second congress in Batavia, 18-20 May 1929, not only stood singing the anthem Indonesia Raya, but even made the anthem Indonesia Raya as a national anthem. The same thing happened at the PNI Congress in Bandung, September 15, 1929, when the congress participants stood up and sang the Indonesian national anthem together with great enthusiasm.
At its peak, in 1930, the already dizzy colonial government took repressive measures. The song Indonesia Raya was declared dangerous because it disrupted public order and peace. The colonial government also banned the anthem Indonesia Raya from being sung and heard in public. In addition, it is also prohibited to distribute the notation and lyrics of the anthem Indonesia Raya in any form, such as books, pamphlets, newspapers, and LPs.
In the end, WR Supratman was summoned by the Dutch authorities. He was questioned about the intent and purpose of composing the anthem Indonesia Raya because the song seemed to be trying to incite the people to revolt against the colonial government. WR Supratman denied the accusations leveled against him by providing strong evidence. He was finally released again.
August 17, 1938 (Wage Wage) WR Soepratman died at Jalan Mangga 21, Surabaya and was buried in the Kapas Public Cemetery, Jalan Kenjeran Surabaya, in an Islamic way. In 1944, after suffering defeat everywhere, Japan formed the National Anthem Committee chaired by Ir. Sukarno. Three times, the committee made changes to the original WR Soepratman manuscript. The song Indonesia Raya was then replayed officially when Indonesia became independent.
Until now the song is always sung on every occasion, both formal and informal. In accordance with the original purpose of creation, in fact this song can indeed raise the spirits of the people who sing it.
