Modules and Printed Books, What’s the Difference?

In the world of education and training there are several types of materials to help the learning process. All materials or guidelines must of course contain a clear point of view, especially regarding the principles used, the approach adopted, the methods used, the teaching techniques used and the facilities used.

One of the teaching materials that are often used are printed books and modules. At first glance, from what we often hear, both have the same goal, which is to make it easier for teachers and students to deliver learning materials.

But if we look at it in more detail, these 2 types of books have differences based on the definitions, characteristics, and standards of the writing process. Here we explain some of these differences.

Print Book

Printed books are also known as textbooks, material books, package books, or study guide books. The form can be in the form of printed textbooks or electronic textbooks ( e-books ).

Printed books are an important part of the learning process. Every lecturer or teacher needs a printed book to help the teaching process. The purpose of textbooks is to help communicate between teachers and students according to the applicable curriculum.

Printed books are usually a provision for learning companions that involve teachers and students directly, either face-to-face or online.

The form of textbooks is like ordinary books whose contents become quality references and usually in formal education textbooks are published by the Ministry of Education or the local Education Office. Meanwhile, textbooks for non-formal educational institutions are written by experts in their respective fields. Textbooks are written for specific instructional purposes. Textbooks are equipped with teaching facilities.

Furthermore, the government sets certain standards that must be met by every book publication that will be used by educational units. In this case the standard is set and issued by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP).

Textbooks have the following characteristics:

  1. Textbooks are arranged with a logical flow according to the lesson plan.
  2. Mindful that seeks to provide new perspectives for students to be more critical.
  3. Encouraging students’ learning motivation to do learning without having to be asked.
  4. The use of textbooks usually requires assistance from the teacher
  5. Packaged as simple as possible so that it is easier to understand, does not appear contradictory, and remains relevant.
  6. There are interesting illustrations so that it is easier for students to understand.
  7. The material presented has a clear, firm point of view. So that it does not confuse students in understanding it.
  8. The content of the relevant material according to the curriculum.
  9. The language used is standard by paying attention to regional taboo idioms to avoid grammatical misunderstandings.

Module

The module is a unified learning material that can be studied by students independently. In it there are components and clear instructions so that students can follow in a sequential manner without the intervention of the teacher.

The modules are also packaged in a systematic and attractive manner with a range of materials, methods, and evaluations that can be used independently in order to achieve the expected competencies.

Module Features

  1. Can be studied independently by anyone.
  2. The purpose of the lesson is formulated specifically, based on behavior.
  3. Opening opportunities for students to progress continuously according to their respective abilities.
  4. Teaching packages that are self – learning open opportunities for students to develop themselves optimally.
  5. Has a fairly strong information power. Elements of association, structure, and sequence of learning materials are formed in such a way that students learn them spontaneously.
  6. There are clear instructions with a unified evaluation at the end of each learning session

In the implementation of learning, the module has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages of learning by using the module are:

  1. The material development costs are high and the time required is long.
  2. Determine high learning discipline that students in general may lack and immature students in particular.
  3. It requires a higher level of perseverance from the facilitator to continuously monitor the student learning process, provide motivation and individual consultation whenever students need it.

Even so, modules also have the advantage of using modules.

  1. The motivation of students is enhanced because every time a student does a task the lesson is clearly defined and in accordance with his abilities.
  2. After the lesson is over, the teacher and students know the abilities of students who are successful and which are not.
  3. Students achieve results according to their abilities.
  4. The learning load is more evenly distributed throughout the semester.
  5. Education is more efficient.
